Shopping Cart Reviews:
Shopify is very simple and easy to use, but it does not have as many built-in features as 3dcart. But it has a much better app store to purchase more features, as well as a POS system for those with online and brick-and-mortar stores. Because a lot of features are available as apps and not built-in, your monthly costs can go up quickly because each app typically has a monthly fee associated with it - on top of your base monthly fee. They also have transaction fees if you don’t use their payment gateway, but only on their lowest plan. Shopify is used by many very large companies and has excellent support. Overall, we like working with Shopify the best.
3dcart is easy to use and has a lot of features that usually cost extra on the other cart systems. Things like gift registry, wish list, rewards program, and more are standard in 3dcart whereas they could cost anywhere from $5-$30 each per month using an app on the other cart systems. 3dcart does have an app store, but it’s for more specialized features that typical stores wouldn’t need. One downside is their plan limits for bandwidth and number of products. The number of products usually isn’t an issue for our clients, but stores that eventually become very busy will usually end up on their highest plan due to bandwidth usage. 3dcart’s support is just “ok”, though.
Bigcommerce has an easy to use admin, as well as an extensive app store for extra functionality, however apps usually cost extra. It’s a good system and has a nice product page layout. One thing we don’t like about Bigcommerce is the transaction fee on the first plan. You would need to go up to their $79.95/mo plan to avoid these fees but when your store eventually gets very busy, you’ll be on that plan anyway. One thing about Bigcommerce is they don’t have bandwidth limits. They a limit on API calls instead, but I am honestly not sure how that translates to actual stores for clients like ours. We haven’t had any clients go over due to API calls so far.
As for Volusion, we used to really dislike Volusion’s admin, however they’ve recently made big improvements. It’s still not as nice and intuitive as the others, but much better. Their design for product, category, checkout, etc. are also greatly improved. We’ve never been a fan, but Volusion is getting better. The options in the admin are still a little convoluted and they don’t have as many default features as 3dcart.
